Manitoba has been around for a long time home to an active Ukrainian community, 180,000 people are recognized as Ukrainian. Newcomer Olha Kusnirik said it was a big help in settling in.

“The only thing that mattered was speaking Ukrainian,” said Kushnyrik, 35, who arrived in Winnipeg last June and now teaches part-time chemistry at the University of Manitoba.

“It was important to meet someone who is from Ukraine or knows Ukraine and has Ukraine in his heart. Who can support because he understands how we feel.”
