A coroner's inquest opens into the death of a Surrete du Quebec officer

A judge's public hearing will open in connection with the death of her attacker, who was killed by Sûreté du Québec Sergeant Maureen Breaux and her colleagues.

He died in the line of duty on March 27, 2023, when he was stabbed while attempting to make an arrest in Louisville, about 100 kilometers northeast of Montreal. His partner was also injured in the attack.

Isaac Brouillard Lessard, accused of her murder, was shot dead by police. He had mental health problems and had at least five previous criminal convictions.

A public inquest will be held in Trois-Rivières and will be presided over by Coroner Gehan Kamel.

Public Safety Minister Francois Bonnardel called for a public inquiry to seek recommendations that could improve how officers act in the future.

In January, after the director of the Department of Crime and Prosecution analyzed evidence gathered by Quebec police watchdog BEI, they concluded that no criminal charges should be brought against the officers for Brouillard Lessard's murder.
