Hundreds of Special Olympics volunteers gathered in Calgary

With Canada's Calgary 2024 Winter Olympics less than two weeks away, nearly 1,000 volunteers gathered for a pre-Games rally on Sunday.

The Special Olympics will draw athletes and volunteers from across Canada to Calgary for the games later this month.

Tourism Calgary says this is one of the largest volunteer events held in the city since the 1988 Winter Olympics.

“The community and excitement for the event has been incredible and it's not a hard sell,” said Carson Ackroyd of Tourism Calgary. “People really want to enhance that experience for athletes in Canada. We think volunteers get the same great experience by volunteering as the athletes experience the games.”

Monday nights on CTV News on Channel Six, we'll be bringing you members of Alberta's Special Olympics Bowling Team as they prepare for the Games.

On February 27, the 2024 Canada Winter Olympic Games will begin in Calgary.

About 1,500 volunteers are expected to participate.
