Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Reilly will receive a personal hearing for a late check

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly was handed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for his actions in the final seconds of Saturday's game against the Ottawa Senators and has been served a personal hearing with the NHL's Department of Player Safety.

With 5.1 seconds left in the game, Senators forward Ridley Greig hit a shot into an empty Maple Leafs net to make it 5-3. Rielly broke out of the game, going after Greig and checking his head. After the scuffle between the two sides died down, the referees reviewed the play and confirmed a major and a foul.

“What their guy did there at the end is stupid,” Maple Leafs goaltender Martin Jones said after the game, referring to Greig's empty net.

When asked about Rielly's reaction, Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said he thought it was “out of place.”

“Their player has the right to do whatever he wants in that moment and our players have the right to react, you know, it's the emotions of the game,” Keefe added.

Both Keefe and Senators head coach Jacques Martin said they expect the league to review the incident.

A hearing time and date have not been announced, but Toronto won't play again until Tuesday. The individual option gives the league the option to suspend Rielly for six or more games.

“It's not a hockey game,” was Martin Rielly's response. “It's a disappointment or something, but it's not part of the game. (Greig) put the puck in the net. It doesn't matter if they push him or shoot him.”

“Reed's game was pretty funny,” Senators forward Shane Pinto shared with a laugh. “So yeah, it was pretty fun in the end.”

Rielly, 29, has 43 points (seven goals and 36 assists) in 50 games this season. He still hasn't had a shutout in his 11-year NHL career.
