A Maryland rat snake may have wanted to boost its metabolism.

A second possibility is that veterinarians at the Wildlife Center in Gaithersburg thought the round object in the stomach of the imported snake might have been a golf ball or a chicken egg. It was big enough that it had a hole in its skin.

In a post on Instagram, the vets noted that this was one of the most unusual cases they had ever received.

“This is common in rat snakes because golf balls and eggs are often mistaken for fresh chicken eggs,” the wildlife center notes. “In this case, the substance stayed in the snake's stomach for so long that a hole appeared in the snake's skin.”

“He (the vet) then sewed up the stomach and repaired the hole left on the underside of the snake,” the report said. “The snake has been with us since the operation and has fully recovered. He will spend the rest of the winter with us and come home in the spring!”
