Maranan leads Wesmen to Canada West playoffs – Winnipeg Free Press

Sean Maranan scored 19 points and dished out nine assists to lead Winnipeg Wesmen University to an 85-76 Canada West men's basketball win.

The win, which improved Winnipeg's record to 15-5, moved the Wesmen into the third seed for the upcoming conference playoffs based on the third-best fielding percentage index of the 12 postseason teams.

Mike Mikhailov added 16 points and eight rebounds for the winners, who got 14 from Malachi Alexander and 12 from Alberto Gordo.

Nick Barnard led the Cougars with 19 points. Regina, who fell to 13-7, holds the sixth seed for the playoffs, which will be held Feb. 21-25 at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.

In the women's game, Jade Belmore scored 20 points to lead Regina to a 63-55 win over Winnipeg.

The Wesmen, 5-15, miss the Canada West playoffs with the 13th seed.

Anna Kernaghan had 18 points, six rebounds and four assists for Winnipeg. Teammate Raya Guinto added 15 points.

In the IGAC, Mason Kraus scored 19 points, added seven rebounds and six assists as Manitoba swept the UBC Okanagan Heat 81-72 to sweep the two-game weekend series at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.

Krauss, who was forced off the floor late in the fourth quarter with a lower-body injury, went 7-11 from the field, including 5-6 from behind the three-point line.

Darren Watts had 13 points for the winners, while star forward Simon Hildebrandt was limited to three rebounds and six points.
