Quebec is closing cannabis shops in Montreal

Quebec will soon have one less cannabis store in Montreal, as the SQDC location is expected to close on March 2nd.

The Plaza Saint-Hubert location, which has 11 employees, will close on March 2, in news first shared by The Canadian Press. Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) members have been notified of a work stoppage. Most of the union members at SQDC branches and say the end of the work will be on March 23, which will allow time for a full shop closure.

SQDC has 98 locations in Quebec. It will be the first store to close in the province. In an interview with StratCann in 2023, SQDC's then-president and CEO said the province was moving away from approving new stores with a new focus on approving new products to attract customers.

CUPE president David Clement told The Canadian Press he believes the store closings are retaliation against the union for a recent job action against several SQDC stores.

The SQDC's latest quarterly report, released in November 2023, showed the province sold $151.7 million worth of cannabis in the second quarter of 2023, generating $61.4 million in revenue from cannabis sales and taxes.
