The Warriors swept Calgary down the stretch on Saturday

February 10, 2024 – Western Hockey League (WHL) – Moose Jaw Warriors News

Calgary, AB – The Moose Jaw Warriors continued their winning ways Saturday afternoon in Calgary.

The Warriors extended their winning streak to five games by knocking off the Hitmen 5-2 at the Scotiabank Saddledome, snapping a two-game road trip to Alberta.

“I thought we got better as the game went on,” Warriors associate coach Scott King said. “It was one of those games where you have to build your momentum, execute the plan, because if you're a little heavy on your feet, you stick with it, find a way to win and that's what we did.”

The Warriors have won 16 of their last 18 games, including an 11-1-0-0 record since the trade deadline. Moose Jaw is second in the Eastern Conference with 68 points.

“The belief that you can walk into any building and no matter what the situation is, you can play well and win,” King said of the Warriors' road success this weekend.

Raylen Kovacevich and Brayden Schuurman each had a goal and two points, while Atlee Calvert had two assists in the win.

Jagger Firkus also tied the modern-era record set by Denton Matejchuk earlier this season, extending the Warriors' all-time scoring streak to 24 games.

Schuurman opened the scoring early, scoring his 15th of the season just 2:24 into the game.

Calgary tied the game at 8:17 when Brandon Gorzynski tied it 1-1 in May.

For the second time on the night, the Warriors ended the first period with a goal in the dying seconds as Cosmo Wilson's shot found the back of the net in the lane with 1.1 seconds left in the frame. It was his first of the season and gave the Warriors a 2-1 lead after one.

After that, Moose Jaw scored three goals to go ahead by four.

Kovacevic scored his 15th of the season with 6:03 left in the second.

Kalem Parker enters the frame with 1:55 left, drives into the zone and puts home his sixth of the year.

Then, just 14 seconds into the second, Brayden Yager scored his 24th of the year.

Hitman Maksim Muranov would score just 53 seconds into the third minute, but it was as close as Calgary would get.

“We did a good job with him, (Evan) Maye made some good saves and I thought as a group, we got everybody involved — the four lines and six Ds all got good minutes, so that's important, too,” King said. said.

May gave up 35 shots to lead the Warriors to victory, and Moose Jaw led the game 37-34.

Neither team scored on the power play, which saw the Warriors go 0-2 and Calgary 0-1.

The Warriors now return home for two games next week, with Brandon coming to the Hangar on Thursday, followed by a rematch against Calgary on Saturday.
