A rally was held at the city hall to invite the mayor of Calgary GeoTv News

A rally demanding the ouster of Mayor Jyoti Gondek was held outside Calgary City Hall on Saturday afternoon, with more than a hundred people lining up to sign the petition.

Among the crowd was Landon Johnston of Calgary, who started a recall petition on January 30.

Johnson has an additional 55 days to collect signatures from 40 percent of Calgary residents, or 514,284 people if he meets the legal requirements.

Johnston said in an interview that he had collected about a thousand signatures, but they had not yet been verified.

He said he believes the campaign has raised “at least a few thousand” so far.

He said he has received positive feedback across the city.

“People who got the information were very happy,” he said. “I don't know how to describe it

“Very few people have closed their doors in my face.”

Gondek said in an interview earlier this week that the recall process was “a little painful.”

Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek is speaking publicly for the first time since starting a petition to withdraw her bid to end her more than two-year term.

Johnston is frustrated by city spending and tax increases, while many struggle with affordability.

“I hope we can fire the mayor because I think someone else can do a better job than him and I have the legal right to do that,” he said.

“So far, the people have supported him.”

Please note: You cannot sign the recall petition online, you must do so in person. For more information, contact Landon Johnston (email protected).
