Suspects open fire on officers during armed and barricaded standoff in North End: police

Two men were arrested and three officers were injured after a gun-barricade standoff that lasted hours in the North End on Saturday, Winnipeg police said.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, officers were called to an apartment building at College Avenue and Charles Street just after 3 a.m. for a report of a woman being held against her will.

Officers say there was a report of several people inside the suite with weapons.

“Members of the tactical support team safely extricated several passengers, including a woman who had been detained earlier. Additional occupants, who are still believed to be armed, refused to exit the suite,” Winnipeg police said in a news release.

Winnipeg police say the suspect opened fire on police during the standoff, hitting three officers with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say they were at the scene for several hours.

Crediting a “concerted effort” by officers, WPS says two men in their 40s have been arrested.

Crime Stoppers and Homicide officers are investigating.
