Montreal Black History Month Blood Donation

Saturday marked the 15th annual Montreal Black History Month Blood Donation Month, when members of Montreal's black community were invited to donate blood.

Organizers say it's easier to find a match for black patients when community members donate blood, especially those with sickle cell anemia.

“We have to do our part,” said Michael Farkas, president of the Black History Month Roundtable. “Unfortunately, we know that there are many young people in the black community with sickle cell disease, and it's good that the donor is from the black community.

“This is a good example of why you should come out, but any other group is welcome.”

Sickle cell anemia is an inherited blood disorder that requires constant blood transfusions and disproportionately affects blacks. HEMA says that one in 10 members of the Quebec black community is a carrier of the disease.

Although the event is part of Montreal's Black History Month activities, Hema Quebec encourages all Quebecers to donate blood regardless of the time of year.

“Blood is always needed, so if people can make themselves aware, if they feel like donating blood to save that life, that's why it's important for everyone to come and give blood, every donation is important,” said Hema Quebec representative Nader Seneston.
