Lunar New Year begins in Montreal's Chinatown – Montreal GeoTv News

With temperatures soaring, a little snow on the horizon and the sun shining, hundreds of Montrealers gathered in the heart of Chinatown to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

“We have a parade, a lion dance, a dragon dance, drumming, fashion shows, talk about a lot of things, and we expect a lot of people,” said Yifang Festival organizer Eva Hu.

This year is the year of the wood dragon.

“The wooden dragon represents creativity, prosperity and opportunity,” Hu said.

He said they focused on being as creative as possible so Montrealers could enjoy every aspect of the festivities.

“There are a lot of installations around Chinatown that are displaying community art in conjunction with the Mural Festival,” Ho said.

The opening ceremony included speeches from Montreal's Chinese community and politicians at all levels, saying that Montreal's Chinatown is unique.

“It's the only French-speaking Chinatown in North America, which makes it very special,” said Liberal MNA Jennifer McCarron.

“Now that it's designated as a historic site, it's important that we celebrate the culture and heritage that the community brings to Montreal and Quebec.”

Lunar New Year celebrations also promote the area and help small businesses.

“There are many businesses and restaurants that have special Lunar New Year menus,” Ho said. “It's a great experience for everyone to come here to explore.”

The festival continues through the end of the week, but special events and celebrations continue for several weeks.
