The IIU is investigating a serious injury involving a prisoner in Winnipeg

Manitoba's Independent Investigations Unit (IIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the arrest of an adult man in Winnipeg.

On January 31st, the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) notified IIU of an incident that resulted in an injury requiring medical attention. According to the report, on Jan. 30 at approximately 9 p.m., WPS members went to a residence in the 600 block of Agnes Street to arrest an adult male wanted on four warrants. Upon arrival, officers were told a man was lying on a second floor balcony. As officers approached the man, he jumped and landed on the ground below. The man was taken into custody and taken to the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre, where it was confirmed he had a broken leg.

Because the injuries are defined as serious injuries under IIU regulations, the IIU is required to conduct an investigation.

Witnesses or people with information or video footage that could assist the investigation are asked to call the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
