Montreal Alouettes released DL Almondo Sewell

This season saw the Montreal Alouettes retain much of their talent from last season's Gray Cup winning team. One of their best defensive linemen will not return to the team in 2024.

The Alouettes have released Almondo Sewell after three seasons, 3DownNation's Justin Dunk reports. Sewell was due to earn a hefty $145,000 with one year left on his contract.

The 37-year-old defensive lineman has played in 46 games with the Alouettes since 2021, recording 52 tackles and nine sacks. Last season was his lowest production year in Montreal, recording 14 tackles and one sack in 16 games.

Prior to Montreal, he played for the Edmonton Eskimos from 2011-20. He was a star on their defensive line, being named a six-time CFL All-Star and seven more CFL West All-Stars. Sewell was also part of Gray Cup championship teams with Edmonton in 2015 and Montreal in 2023. He played in 185 career games, recording 334 tackles and 69 sacks.

Sewell could sign with any CFL team this offseason, as it could be his last CFL outing. He has proven to be a good rotational defensive tackle for teams looking for depth.

Montreal has a chance to reach out to free agents looking for a replacement for Sewell. February 13 is the official first day of CFL free agency.
