Manitoba breweries win national awards – Winnipeg Free Press

Manitoba breweries were among the winners of the 2023 Canadian Brewers' Choice Awards, which were presented in late January at a ceremony in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.

Good Neighbor Brewing Co. Awarded New Brewery of the Year; After starting contract brewing in Winnipeg Oxus Brewing Co. In 2021, the brewery, led by the team of head brewer Morgan Wielgosz and director of marketing Amber Sarraillon, opened its brick-and-mortar facility at 110 Sherbrooke Street in May 2023.

One of the two winners of this year's Brewer of the Year award was new Dauphin representative Marcos Bardelli. Obsolete Brewing Co. Bardelli started brewing in Brazil before moving to Manitoba. Aged opened its doors in September 2023, and its beers have recently hit store shelves outside of Dauphin, including Winnipeg (though they're scarce at beer retailers and sold out at Liquor Marts).

There are still some tickets available Beer is an art, the event will take place March 28 at WAG-Qaumajuq, with nearly every Manitoba brewery, contract brewer and brewpub participating. Participating brewers will bring new, exclusive and small-batch brews to the crowd as they tour the galleries and enjoy live music.

Tickets are $65 and include entry to all WAG galleries. Those looking to beat the crowds can pay an additional $15 for early access to the event. Beers of the week

Nonsuch Brewing Co. La Pils Craft Pilsner (Winnipeg — $4/473ml can, brewery, Liquor Marts, beer vendors)

The 2022 Canada Beer Cup gold medalist, formerly known as La Moliere, has been rebranded. It's medium straw in color and mostly transparent and offers a delicate combination of malt and bread dough, red apple, floral and herbal notes bursting aromatically. It's a light plus-bodied and crisp pilsner, with malty and biscuity flavors up front and in the middle, very subtle red apple skin and grassy notes, the tiniest of hoppy touches and a clean, simple finish (it's 4.8% alcohol). Still a winner. 4/5

One Great City Brewing Co. Garbage Boy Golden Ale (Winnipeg — $4.15/473ml can, brewery, beer retailers)

Produced in conjunction with the release of Michael McMullen's self-published novel Garbage Boy: High Level of Low Expectations, this brew is medium golden in color and clear, with upfront malty aromas that come through with hints of earth and musty apples. It's light plus bodied and dry, very simple with forward and simple bread dough and malt aromas, almost tinny bitterness and 4.5% alcohol. 2.5/5

Trans Canada Brewing Co. Mountaineer Cold IPA (Winnipeg — $4.24/473ml can, brewery, Liquor Marts, beer retailers)

Pale gold and clear in appearance, this cold IPA features Citra and Talus hops; There is an earthy, funky note that comes with aromatic grassy, ​​tropical and ripe grapefruit notes. On the medium-bodied, robust palate (it's 6.8% alcohol), the earthy and grassy notes are front and center with the malt and citrus flavors dominating, while the slightly resinous finish is prolonged by relatively high alcohol and moderate bitterness. 3/5

Chapter 6 Brewing Co. Duh. IPA (Brandon — $3/355ml can, brewery, Liquor Marts, beer retailers)

Light golden in color and hazy, this East Coast-style IPA features Centennial, Idaho 7 and other hop varieties. The nose has a nice upfront tropical fruit component supported by notes of herbs and grapefruit peel and hints of malt. It's medium-bodied, with supple citrus and grassy notes that work well with ripe tropical flavors, all underpinned by a balanced malt component. Bitterness does not offend; Combined with a relatively modest 5.8 percent alcohol, this is a very affordable (and tasty) IPA. 4/5

Kilter Brewing Co. Caribbean Sunset Cocktail Sour (Winnipeg — $4.50/473ml can, brewery, beer retailers)

This cocktail is infused with sour pineapple, coconut, pomegranate and key lime; it's medium gold and hazy in appearance, and aromatically it offers bright coconut, tropical fruit (especially pineapple) and slightly sweet lime notes. It is light and sweet, delicate and very attractive, with lime and grapefruit flavors, with a light acidity, coconut and tropical notes that add richness and sweetness, modest due to alcohol (it is five percent), but it remains. because of the acidity and sweetness. Like summer in a can. 3.5/5

Good Neighbor Brewing Co. Chai Vanilla Chilled Chai Rice Lager (Winnipeg — $4.25/473ml can, brewery, beer retailers)

After brewing, this rice lager is infused with chai tea before being infused with Madagascar vanilla. It's light gold and slightly hazy, and aromatically, it offers notes of cloves, baking spices, vanilla and subtle malts. It's light and slightly dry, with a sweet dessert spice that goes well with vanilla and malt flavors and a modest finish at 4.2% alcohol. 3.5/5
