Over 2,900 Alta. students participated in a school walk

The 16-year-old lead organizer of an Alberta school walkout against the province's proposed gender policy said about 2,906 students took part in Wednesday's protests at more than 80 schools across the province.

The hike was inspired by Leduc, Alta. Aspen Servo, a 10th grader, worries about his transgender 13-year-old brother.

“I'm lucky to have grown up in a safe home to be whoever I want to be, but not all kids are that lucky,” Servo told The Canadian Press, adding that he knows others. like happiness.

“Some are rejected or ostracized, and it hurts when your parents tell you that you're not their child anymore.”

Starting at 10am on Wednesday, students walked out of their schools to take part in demonstrations against the policy announced by Prime Minister Daniel Smith.

Students from Canada West, Crescent Heights, William Aberhart and Henry Wise Wood schools in Calgary protested.

They were joined by teenagers from Okotoks, Airdrie, Cochrane, Lethbridge, Edmonton and Leduc.
