An off-duty RCMP officer was attacked outside a Winnipeg elementary school

Two men are facing multiple charges after allegedly assaulting an RCMP officer outside an elementary school during dismissal.

According to Winnipeg police, officers were called to Buchanan School in the 800 block of Buchanan Boulevard around 3:10 p.m. When they arrived, they found an adult male, later identified as an RCMP officer. – bodily injuries from an attack. He was taken to hospital for treatment and two men were arrested.

Investigators discovered that the two suspects were in a car during school dismissal and began to riot. The security guard approached the car, introduced himself and asked the men to leave the area due to the behavior of the men near the school.

“The suspects became angry, got out of the car, threatened the officer and physically assaulted him. “Several bystanders witnessed the attack and tried to stop the ongoing attack,” the police said in a news release.

Police said they took measures to contain and secure the school, and officers who attended the school helped get students out safely.

A 39-year-old Winnipeg man and a 44-year-old man have been charged with assaulting a peace officer, threatening and causing a disturbance.

A 44-year-old man is also charged with driving a car.

Both were released on bond.

Police are continuing to investigate.

A spokesperson for the St. James-Assiniboia School District said all safety protocols were followed during the incident.

“Counselors were on hand Wednesday to provide emotional support to students who need help,” a spokeswoman said. “Violence in society is unacceptable in any form.”
