The Montreal Alouettes have agreed to terms with Canadian defensive tackle Derek Wiggan and, barring unforeseen circumstances, he is expected to join the team on a one-year contract through the 2024 season.

The 31-year-old played in all 18 games for the Calgary Stampeders last season, his fourth campaign without missing a game due to injury. He finished the year with 16 passes defensed and four sacks, setting the previous career high in 2019.

Originally selected in the fourth round of the 2014 CFL draft, Wiggan returned for one final season at Queen's University before joining the Stampeders in 2015. He spent all eight CFL seasons with the club, racking up 161 tackles, six special teams tackles, and 19 tackles. sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception in 133 career games.

The Alouettes released veteran All-American defensive tackle Almondo Sewell on Thursday, marking a potential attitudinal change at the position. The team is looking to fill a void after Canadian defensive end Lwal Uguak signed with the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers last month.

Pending free agents can negotiate with all league teams during the current window, which closes on February 11. Players can agree to contract terms with a specific team through 2024, but those deals are not legally binding and cannot be made. Will be completed or officially confirmed before free agency opens on February 13th.

Montreal opens the 2024 season when it visits the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for a Gray Cup rematch on June 6 at Princess Auto Stadium.
