Toronto Raptors trade at NBA Trade Deadline: Here's what happened

WE DID IT! We've reached the 2024 NBA trade deadline — after the Raptors made a total of four trades before the deadline this afternoon.

Let's break down every move the Raptors made this offseason:

The day before the due date

If you follow the Raptors at all, you'll know about two of the biggest trades of the offseason by now, but let's take a look at them again just in case.

The Raptors opened the season on December 30 with a trade with the New York Knicks. They sent OG Anunoby, Precious Achiuwa and Malachi Flynn to the Big Apple in exchange for RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley and a second-round draft pick.

Three weeks later, on January 18th, they made another big move, sending Pascal Siakam to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Bruce Brown, Kyra Lewis Jr., Jordan Nwora and three first-round picks.

With their biggest moves, the Raptors were all about adjusting and selling at the trade deadline. They also had three potential first-round picks in this year's draft, and Masai said he didn't use all of them.

Last day shift

The Toronto Raptors kicked off their deadline day with a trade that brought another Canadian to the Raptors. Toronto traded Otto Porter Jr., Kyra Lewis Jr. and one of their first round picks to the Utah Jazz in exchange for Kelly Olympique and Ochai Agbaji.

The move addresses the Raptors' need for another big to free up the floor for Scotty Barnes to operate on, as well as another promising young player in Agbaji.

People split this trade into two parts — you get Olynyk for Porter Jr., with size and years of age. Then for the first round pick/Lewis Agbaji Jr. — instead of getting a guaranteed contract in the first round, in a weak draft, you get a player who already has prospects.

The Raptors aren't done yet. Soon after, a trade was announced that sent Dennis Schroder and Thad Young to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie.

Not long after, the Raptors announced that they would waive Dinwiddie. So the trade was to remove Young and Schroeder from the roster.

According to Michael Grange, on The Raptors Show with Blake Murphy and Will Lue, Schroeder seemed “upset” about being benched in December. The guard started the season in the starting lineup, but was replaced by Gary Trent Jr. when it became clear that the lineup needed to be rebuilt.

As this was a possible motivation, he moved on.

The Raptors now have two open roster spots.

Surprise gifts

Many thought the Raptors would move Bruce Brown, but he stayed. Bobby Webster said in his post-deadline statement that the offers they received didn't suit them, so they passed.

Bruce Brown has a team option for next season, making him a valuable trade asset for Toronto even this summer.

There were also speculations of moving Chris Boucher, but they didn't do that either. The Canadian remains on the team as the number of Canadians on the roster increases to three.

The latest potential move was Gary Trent Jr., who will be a free agent this summer. It seems that the Raptors are still interested in Trent's future with this team, so they decided to continue monitoring him for the rest of the season.

Project choices

The Raptors currently have three, possibly four, picks in the 2024 NBA draft.

First, one pick from Indiana, 1-3 protected. Indiana looks to be in contention this season (or at least in playoff contention), so the odds of them going 1-3 are slim.

Then another first round pick, which could be the lowest of OKC, Houston, LA Clippers, or Utah State.

They have one second round pick coming from Detroit.

Finally, there are 1-6 protected picks from the Poeltl trade last season. If the Raptors go 1-6, they keep that pick, and if not, it goes to San Antonio.

What now?

The Raptors are looking to fill two roster spots in the buyout/free agency market.

However, don't expect them to gain any major fame. The team is prioritizing young men to fit their new vision to match Scotty Barnes.

They may drop into the G-League or go international to find talent to watch.

Either way, the rest of this season is all about seeing the team play together as much as possible. The front office decides what they want to do and who they want to move on.

That's it! All the moves the Raptors made before the 2024 trade deadline!

Other thoughts ahead…
