Regulator calls Trans Mountain “environmental noncompliance” in B.C

Canada's energy regulator said Thursday its inspectors found problems near Abbotsford, B.C., where Trans Mountain Corp. is working on the final leg of a multiyear pipeline project.

The regulator said the Crown corporation failed to properly maintain watercourse containment, wildlife fencing, soil covers and dewatering pumps and sumps after recent heavy rains.

The regulator ordered Trans Mountain Corp to address environmental deficiencies, develop a water management plan and investigate and report its environmental deficiencies in the area.

The Trans Mountain pipeline is Canada's only oil pipeline to the West Coast, and its expansion will increase the pipeline's capacity from the current 300,000 bpd to 890,000 bpd.

Construction is more than 98 percent complete, but Trans Mountain Corp. dealing with various challenges due to hard rock and difficult terrain.
