Illinois girl pleads not guilty to alleged obstruction in shooting – Winnipeg Free Press

JOLIET, ill. (AP) – The girlfriend of a man suspected of fatally shooting seven relatives and an eighth in suburban Chicago last month pleaded not guilty Thursday to obstruction of justice.

Kylie Cleveland-Singleton, 21, of Joliet, pleaded guilty in Will County Circuit Court. He is under house arrest.

Prosecutors said she gave false information to authorities during the investigation and search for her 23-year-old boyfriend, Romeo Nance. Police say Nance shot and killed seven members of his family and one other person before fleeing to Texas, where he shot and killed himself as U.S. Marshals approached him. closed to him.

Prosecutors said the charge stemmed from Cleveland-Singleton telling investigators she did not have Nance's phone number. They both have one child.

Joliet police said Cleveland-Singleton agreed to give her answer to police on Jan. 22 after she was identified as Nance's girlfriend and the mother of his 3-year-old son. Nance shot himself that day.

The eight people who shot Nance to death were found Jan. 22-23, authorities said. The reason for the killing was not disclosed.

Those killed in the shooting were identified as Nance's mother, Tamaeka Nance, 47; her brother Joshua Nance, 31; sister Alexandria Nance, 20; two sisters aged 16 and 14; Aunt Christine Esters, 38; and brother William Esters II, 35.

Another man, 28-year-old Toyosi Bakare, was shot dead outside the apartment building. Police said Nance accidentally shot him and another man, who was wounded in the leg.
