Toronto Raptors trade Schröder, Young to Nets at NBA trade deadline

The Toronto Raptors remain active at the 2024 NBA trade deadline.

The Raptors will trade guard Dennis Schroder and forward Ted Young to the Brooklyn Nets at the NBA trade deadline, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

In return, the Raptors receive 30-year-old guard Spencer Dinwiddie.

Schroder is averaging 13.7 points, 6.1 assists and 2.7 rebounds in 51 games this season, while Young is averaging five points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 23 games this season.

Dinwiddie averaged 12.6 points, 6 assists and 3.3 rebounds in 48 games for Brooklyn this season. The Raptors will be Dinwiddie's fifth NBA team, having played for the Detroit Pistons, Dallas Mavericks and Washington Wizards.

Toronto, which is 18-33 and 12th in the Eastern Conference, is currently in the midst of a rebuild despite hopes of being competitive this season.

While Scotty Barnes recently earned his first career All-Star honor, Toronto traded away three of its first five regulars, with Schröder, Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby finding new homes in those trades. year.

The move with the Nets appears to largely clear up Toronto's goaltending cap space going forward, with Schröder making $13 million next season in the final year of a two-year deal. Since Toronto doesn't want to be competitive in the near future, it seems like they would prefer to clear a roster spot for a young player.

Dinwiddie and Young's contracts expire this year at $18.8 million and $8 million, respectively.

Update: According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Raptors plan to waive Dinwiddie.

It's Toronto's second move of the day, having previously acquired Kelly Olympique and Ochoa Agbaji from the Utah Jazz.

The NBA trade deadline is set for today at noon PT/3pm ET.
