Off-duty RCMP officer assaulted in Winnipeg

Two Winnipeg men are facing charges after allegedly assaulting an off-duty RCMP officer in Winnipeg.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, the incident occurred on February 6, 2024 in the 800 block of Buchanan Boulevard at 3:00 p.m. Investigators say two men caused a disturbance in a car parked on the street near an elementary school. . An off-duty police officer approached the suspect's car, introduced himself and asked him to leave the area due to his behavior near the school.

The suspects became enraged, got out of the car, threatened and assaulted the officer. Several bystanders intervened to stop the attack on the officer. The officer sustained upper body injuries and was later admitted to the hospital for treatment.

The suspects were arrested by WPS members without incident.

Two suspects, a 39-year-old man and a 44-year-old man, were charged with assaulting a peace officer, threatening to cause death or bodily harm and causing a disturbance.

The 44-year-old was also charged with impaired transportation with a BAC equal to or greater than 80 mg within 2 hours of ceasing to operate and operating while impaired by any degree of BAC or drugs or a combination of both.

Both were released on bond.
