'Anger has piled up': Kyriakos Vogiatzakis' family have called for an inquest into his death

The brother of Kyriakos Vogiatzakis shared his anger and grief as he recalled what he did not do the night his brother was attacked and killed outside his St James restaurant on Tuesday.

Those emotions prompted the inquiry into the death of Mike Vogiatzakis' younger brother.

Kyriakos, the 51-year-old owner of Cork and Flame, died Jan. 24 after being attacked outside his business.

“I have a lot of anger in me. I've got a lot of frustration,” Mike told the media on Tuesday.

“I can't believe my brother died in the hospital. “My brother died on the street.”

Mike said his family was able to track how long it took for first responders to arrive at the scene using video footage taken by a witness. The family said Kyriakos was on the ground outside their restaurant for 25 minutes from the time 911 was called while he received medical attention.

“The ambulance arrived at 17:55. “My brother was on the street for 25 minutes.”

CTV News Winnipeg emailed Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) broke down the response time on the night of the incident.

WFPS said the 911 call came in at 5:37 p.m., and units were dispatched two minutes later. A fire engine arrived at the scene at 5.42pm but could not enter until crews were deemed safe – which was at 5.49pm.

At this time, emergency teams began to provide assistance. Then at 5:55 p.m., the first ambulance arrived, and at 5:58 p.m., another emergency took place at the same scene.

Mike also said that the defibrillator in the ambulance was not working when he showed up.

However, WFPS said all equipment used at the scene was working properly.

“Anyway, things went wrong and we have to call 911 and ask what happened that day.

According to Kelly Gorkoff, associate professor of criminal justice at the University of Winnipeg, a coroner conducts an inquest into a death due to a failure in the public domain.

A public inquiry usually focuses on more than one incident.

“Now, I think it still meets the benchmark of what's being asked, which is how a system failure led to someone's death,” Gorkoff said.

In terms of an investigation or investigation, he suggested the family wait until the police investigation is complete before taking further action.

Mike said he is waiting for someone from the city to contact the family, and WFPS is encouraging the victim's family to contact them to help address their concerns.

Curtis Ross Dalebozik was charged with manslaughter and menacing. The charges have not been tried in court and he is scheduled to appear before a judge in late May.
