CMLC will top $1 billion in Calgary projects this year: Here's what they look like

It's shaping up to be a big year for Calgary when it comes to new construction and development.

There are a number of projects, some of which will begin this year, including the Green Line and the events center, and some of which will now be completed; including the expansion of the BMO Center.

The company behind the project — CMLC, the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation — is doing other work.

“2024 will be a big year for project completion and ground breaking, as well as progress and development in downtown Calgary's east side,” CMLC president and CEO Keith Thompson said in a statement.

“CMLC has a proven track record of designing and delivering Calgary's most transformative projects.”

Calgary's mayor says he has more than $1 billion in projects under construction or to be completed this year.

Here is a list of projects and their timelines:

Arts Commons and Calgary's downtown core

CMLC is managing the Arts Commons Transformation and Olympic Plaza Transformation projects on behalf of the Arts Commons and the City of Calgary.

The company said it is preparing to unveil designs for the Arts Commons Transformation expansion this spring.

It will be a new building with a 1,000-seat theater and a 200-seat studio theater, and they expect to break ground later this year.

The Olympic Plaza Transformation Project, which CMLC says supports Arts Commons' vision for an expanded, integrated Arts Commons campus, is also moving through the design phase this year.

Eastern village

CMLC continues to oversee the development of several residential projects in Calgary's East Village, including BOSA Development's Arris Residences and Alston Properties' EV606.

Construction of 44 residential units and 9,000 square feet of prime retail space for this project is underway.

BMO Center and Culture and Entertainment District

The BMO Center expansion will open for Stampede 2024. It will be the largest convention center in Western Canada with the rebuilt Victoria Park/Stamped Station and 17 Ave SE expansion projects completed this summer.

CMLC said more than $600 million in major urban development projects will cross the finish line in 2024 at Calgary Stampede and in partnership with the City of Calgary.

As district construction coordinator, the team said it will continue to support the coordination of many developments in the cultural and entertainment district, including the new Calgary Events Center and the Green Line LRT 4 St SE station.
