“The only thing that's going to stop us is if the mayor starts doing his job,” says Landon Johnston

A red F-350 truck is parked outside their home in an old school suburb south of Calgary, where they have no appetite for bad politicians.

“He was able to bring us together as a city – against him,” says Landon Johnston of Jyoti Gondek, who one poll found to be the most unpopular mayor in Calgary's history.

Johnston is a guy who wants his voice heard and has started a petition to oust Gondek, and he needs over half a million signatures to show him a way out.

Johnston is not a slick political operator. He planned to go around the city and collect as many signatures as possible.

Repairs stoves, works in air conditioning, installs hot water tanks.

At work, he would take the opportunity to ask people for signatures.

And it wasn't about the money.

“The only donation was bringing cans of pop.”

But after he sent an e-mail to the press and it was reported that he had a request to dismiss Gondek, everything happened quickly.

He didn't realize the support he would receive from thousands and thousands of emails.

He shows me two thousand from Wednesday morning.

He received offers of help from all sorts of people, with people of all political persuasions knocking on the door and willing to sign.

There is a website. It's recallmayorgondek.com and there's an account on Twitter now called X.

He said the name of this account will go on the website and you will be able to get updates on how the campaign is going.

There will also be a launch event for the Gondek wrestling campaign.

On Saturday at 13.00 at the city hall. There you can sign the Dump Gondek petition. You can sign up for volunteering.

Door knockers are expected to appear in the next two days.

Signing locations are also expected to be set up around the city.

Johnston tells a neighbor about going to a supplier to get a part, and there are a lot of people around, and it's the first time he's been publicly recognized.

“Everything was ready and willing to sign. I don't need to convince anyone. It is not my job to convince people. The mayor has already done it.”

Even so far, no one has refused to sign.

What do they say when they sign the petition?

“I can't repeat what people say to me.”

Like him, they want to listen.

“People sent me collage books of things the mayor did wrong.”

Johnston has one wish. It's not what you expect.

“I want to talk to the mayor and find someone who supports him.

“I have yet to meet anyone who admires his leadership.”

Everyone has a question.

What if Gondek has a low favorability rating at your job?

“What will your next day at this job be like?” Are you doing what he's doing while ignoring performance reviews?''

According to Johnston, he could have taken the easy way out.

He could launch a recall petition against his councilman, Peter Demong, a one-time conservative now closely associated with City Hall.

“I could follow my advisor. We'd have it in one weekend.”

Johnston has already printed 10,000 application forms. One page I was given has room for 11 names.

A person who is in charge of a responsibility that others with more experience in politics do not go to is much more optimistic than a few days ago.

“The only thing that will stop us is if the mayor starts doing his job.”

Don't hold your breath.

He also targets mentor Andre Chabot, who says Johnston is involved in theater.

According to Johnston, his stand was never and is not a theater and the councilman shows some city hall arrogance to say that.

As for arrogance, Gondek is still completely dismissive of those around him.

“What would a good leader do?” asks Johnston.

“They admit their mistakes and say, 'I understand what's going on.' I will do it differently.”

Johnston looks ready for this fight. He feels good, despite the fact that it is a task worthy of Hercules.

“It's not a long time anymore. We will surprise everyone with our hands.

“And whether we get enough signatures or not, our voices would be heard.”
