Calgary Flames sign Martin Pospisil to 2-year, $2 million extension

The Calgary Flames kept their promising rookie forward by signing forward Martin Pospisil to a two-year, $2 million extension on Wednesday night.

Pospisil has quickly become a fan favorite in Calgary because of his willingness to throw down physical and spirited play at both ends of the ice.

The 24-year-old Slovakian has played in 37 games (87) since January 20th before last night's showdown against the Boston Bruins.

The former 4th-round pick was rewarded offensively for his high-powered play with 4 goals and 11 points, and Calgary's top offensive producer Nazem Kadri (15G, 42P in 50GP) started a 4-1 road win on Tuesday along with fellow rookie Connor. Zari.

Later in the game, officials assessed Pospisil a 5-minute major and a game-tying penalty for handling Bruins captain Brad Marchand. The league announced today that he will no longer be able to write.

Pospisil and Zarri contribute to the Flames' long-term plans, especially given the former's new extension, but Calgary isn't out of the playoffs here and now.

Strong campaigns by Kadri, veteran center Blake Coleman (+22 in 40P, 50GP) and resurgent netminder Jakob Markstrom (2.55 GAA, .913SV%) kept Calgary in the hunt for the final wildcard despite trading Nikita Zadorov earlier in the season. and star representative Elias Lindholm on the break.

The Flames are just 3 points back of eighth and a strong showing in Boston could lift their spirits heading into the second half of the year under new coach Ryan Huska.

Calgary returns to action tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. against the New Jersey Devils as they try to extend their new-found winning streak to three at home.
