A record warm-up on the way to Toronto, GTA

Unseasonal and seasonal warming is underway across southern Ontario, with double-digit temperatures expected by Friday.

Toronto and the GTA are forecast to see daytime highs of 10 degrees by the end of the week. As a result of gradual warming, the temperature in the city will rise from 3 degrees on Wednesday to 5 degrees on Thursday.

The average daily maximum temperature in February is 0 C, the average minimum is -7 C.

According to CityNews meteorologist Natasha Ramsahai, temperature records could be set on Friday as many areas reach double digits. Rain is expected, but there will be limited sunshine throughout the day.

“On Friday, you might need an extra five or 10 minutes for these on-and-off showers,” Ramsahay said. “The thickness of the current snow is not enough. These ski hills are struggling to get snow and hold on to it.”

In terms of unseasonably warm weather, Saturday also looks good, with partly sunny weather and near-record temperatures as many places reach double digits.

“A cold front is coming in late Saturday, so say goodbye to the double digits,” Ramsahay said. “But here we are, down to 4 degrees on Sunday, which is still above the season.”

Elsewhere in the province, temperatures in northern Ontario will average 15 degrees above seasonal averages throughout the week.

Toronto has seen little snow this winter. Last year, 123 cm of snow fell in January, this year only 27 cm was collected. In 2022, over 150 cm of snow fell in Toronto in the same month.
