A Toronto man made anti-Muslim comments and stole a phone at a store

Police have charged a suspect in a hate-motivated robbery on Toronto's east side over the weekend.

It happened Sunday, just after 1:45 p.m., in the area of ​​Danforth and Worden avenues.

According to police, the accused entered the store and shouted anti-Muslim remarks at an employee.

The shop customer approached the accused and demanded not to disturb the employee, the accused started making anti-Muslim remarks about him.

Police allege that the accused assaulted the customer, causing him to fall to the ground.

As soon as he fell, officers said he grabbed his cell phone and ran out of the store.

Toronto police have charged Tim Rogers, 49, with aggravated robbery and two counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

The allegations have not been tested in court.

Investigators are treating the incident as a hate crime.
