Fog Warning Ahead of Record Warming Expected for Toronto, GTA

Thursday morning is likely to be slow for commuters in the GTA with Toronto and the rest of the region covered by a fog warning.

Visibility will drop to zero in some places and Environment Canada is warning that freezing fog can make streets slippery.

“Drivers should be careful,” the report said. “Black ice may form in areas with below freezing temperatures due to low fog.”

A fog warning extends north of the city, including the Barrie and Orillia areas.

According to a CityNews 680 meteorologist, the fog won't clear until Thursday, with a guaranteed high temperature of 4 degrees in Toronto.

“The fog will clear this morning, but it will be cloudy all day,” Taylor said, adding that some rain is expected overnight, but it should end by 6 a.m. Friday.

Friday will be a record-breaking heat, as the temperature will be close to 12 degrees. The record for February 9 in Toronto was 10.6 degrees, set in 1965.

The weather will cool down on Sunday, but temperatures will still be above seasonal levels, near 4 degrees. The average daytime high temperature in February is close to freezing 0 C, the average low temperature is -7 C.

Taylor says snow could hit the city next week.

“We'll see some snow accumulation Monday into Tuesday night,” he said.

Toronto has seen little snow this winter. Last year, 123 cm of snow fell in January, this year only 27 cm was collected. In 2022, over 150 cm of snow fell in Toronto in the same month.
