Thursday, February 8, 7:30 p.m

Art Gallery of Winnipeg, 300 Memorial Blvd.

Reserve tickets: wfp.to/mercredi

A new work by poet Duncan Mercredi debuts at DreamPlay's Small Concerts. The hour-long “modern mini-opera” is divided into four parts, combining Mercredi's poems, songs and wolf stories.

A Métis/Cree storyteller and writer from Missipawistik, Grand Rapids, the work is often personal and emotional, reflecting the loss he and his community experienced during his teenage years when he lost his home to Grand Rapids Hydro. Project.

Mercredi performs with Broken Songs: Glenn Burr, Margaret Sweetman, Gilles Fournier and Daniel Roy.

“This new work includes stories and poems and songs and spoken word with music; I wrote some music and we also did some music with Duncan and the band,” Boor says.

“The work lives on through Duncan's parents and especially his grandmother, who taught him stories. The music is generally eclectic and explores some genres close to Duncan's heart: country music and blues; there are songs as well as instrumental music that underlies the poems.'

Although admission is pay-as-you-go, seats must be reserved in advance.

This is the third concert in the DreamPlay Small Concerts five-concert series. An initiative of DreamPlay Productions, the concerts serve to support Winnipeg artists and visitors with a focus on music, poetry and theatre.
