A suspect is being sought in an attempted copper wire theft that resulted in a downtown power outage

Some downtown Calgarians were in the dark for nearly six hours Tuesday night.

An attempt to steal a copper wire knocked out power in part of the city, and police are now investigating.

The suspect attempted to steal copper wire from a warehouse at 7th Avenue and 9th Street.

It can be seen that there is a fire and smoke is coming from the area.

It happened between 19:30 and 20:00

Police, firefighters and Enmax shut down several blocks as they investigated.

Power was restored shortly after 1 a.m

Residents living between 3rd and 11th streets along 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th avenues were without power.

CTV spoke with one Staples employee who said he was working when the power went out, which shocked him and his co-workers.

Investigators continue to search for the suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
