OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canadian police have charged a Montreal man with threats to kill Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in X, former Twitter posts, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said on Wednesday.

A 30-year-old man has been charged with threats and will appear in a Montreal court on Wednesday, the RCMP said in a statement. The charge carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison.

RCMP said the charges were laid on Jan. 31 after a brief investigation into the man's “threatening comments,” but did not provide details.

A spokeswoman for the RCMP's Quebec branch said police have recently launched similar investigations into online threats against Trudeau, and some have been charged.

“We've seen more incidents like this since the COVID pandemic, and as a result we've adapted our resources to effectively monitor the Internet. So we're in a better position to prevent real threats,” the spokesperson said.

Trudeau's office said it would not comment on the prime minister's security.
