Montreal Sisters On A Mission To Empower Others To Embrace Their Black Curly Hair – Montreal

Two young sisters from St. Hubert, south of Montreal, are inspiring tens of thousands of followers in Canada and beyond.

The black couple owns a business selling hair products and other accessories. It is called Koyly Kurly, referring to their curly hair.

“I wanted to show other little girls and other people that their hair is beautiful; Your natural hair is amazing,” commented 11-year-old Kira Milan.

It all started at the age of five, when she and her mother, Shenica Paris, posted tutorials on children's hair on YouTube. An online following began to grow and Milan began receiving sponsorships as a natural hair influencer.

“She's worked with Barbie, Michaels, H&M, Sephora in Canada,” Paris said. “He has worked with over 300 brands so far.”

According to his mother, Milan wanted to sell his products three years ago. By then, his sister Kali Brown, now seven, was old enough to work with him, so they started the business.

“They chose the colors, they chose the name,” Paris told Global News. “Basically everything about the business is girls. Like clients, I work every day.”

She also manages Instagram accounts for businesses, as well as accounts for her daughters, saying “they don't have phones or access Instagram or TikTok. All they watch is YouTube.”

She said the family doesn't discuss social media traffic and how much the kids earn from the brands.

However, the girls have clients all over the world thanks to their influence on social media. For Milan, the priority is to help young girls embrace their curly hair.

“Your curly hair can do so many things,” she said from a room in the family home that serves as storage, playroom and guest room. “Yeah, you can fix it, but you can do a bunch of different styles.”

Their father, Kemani Brown, is proud of the example the girls set for others.

“They are working towards a goal,” he said. “They understand what they want out of life.”

The sisters believe they learn something good about life from the whole experience.
